This full day trip hopping from island to island, starts in Bergen by express boat. You'll be dropped off at a place called Krakhella, where a bus transfers you to the quaint village of Hardbakke in Solund.
From here, you will board a postal boat named Stjernsund. In addition to delivering mail, the boat transports passengers, school children and sometimes even sheep. The captain will share local history of these remote communities as you cruise past unique rock formations, hundreds of small islands and straits so narrow you wonder how even the smallest boat will manage to navigate through.
Once you've arrived at the island of Bulandet you can enjoy lunch at the local cafe, or rent a bike to explore the area between Bulandet and Askvoll in Værlandet.
If you don’t rent a bike, you can enjoy your free time in the Bulandet area. A bus will take you from Bulandet to Askvoll.
From Askvoll you will return to Bergen by express boat.
Photo stop at Gåsvær
The postal boat will drop you off at an island called Gåsvær. Here, you will have 30 minutes to explore the colorful houses and breathtaking shoreline.
Stjernsund Postal Boat
There's no better way to explore the narrow waters on the western coastline of Norway than on the postal boat. Listen to stories about the tiny communities living in the area, all told by the experienced captain. He's a fantastic local guide!
Alverstraumen
The express boat journeys through Alverstraumen, a narrow strait with strong tidal currents. The tidal whirlpools have both fascinated and challenged the people who had to pass them on the important trading route in and out of Bergen.
Fjord wildlife
Keep a lookout for the local wildlife that can be spotted in these parts of the coastline. Search the sky for sea eagles and falcons hunting for their next prey. Sunbathing seals can sometimes also be found on the shores.
Bulandet
Bulandet consists of about 300 islands and islets, with people living on 15 of them. Nordsjøporten road (The Gateway of the North Sea) beautifully links several of the islands by bridges. The name Bulandet originates from the norwegian word for boathouse
Værlandet
The 9 square-km (3.5 sq mi) island located immediately east of the Bulandet island group. Værlandet has a population of approximately 200 residents. The island connects to Værlandet through 6 bridges (Nordsjøporten).
Lågøystolane
These big rocks raise up from the water in a unique and beautiful manner. Though centuries they have been an important navigation mark for boats and ships passing through.
