Whale Watching and Fjord Adventure in Alta

Spot Humpback Whales and Orcas in Norway’s Winter Wonderland

In winter, the fjords of Northern Norway become a herring-rich haven, drawing majestic whales like humpbacks and orcas. This season gives you a rare chance to see these amazing creatures up close. You can also explore the beautiful landscapes of Norway’s northern fjords.

Why Choose a Winter Whale Watching Tour?

On this whale safari, you will see stunning winter skies, tall mountains, and the wildlife of the fjords. This experience is a perfect blend of adventure and nature.

Once aboard the boat, we will navigate the fjords in search of humpback whales and orcas. We stay at a safe distance and turn off the boat’s engines. This way, the whales can come to us if they want. Often, these curious creatures swim near, creating close encounters.

While these tours provide excellent whale-spotting opportunities, we cannot guarantee sightings because they depend on whale migration patterns.

What does the tour include?

The whale watching trip begins with a brief orientation. We will provide you with warm suits, life vests, gloves, boots, and goggles to ensure your comfort during the trip.

Led by an expert guide, the tour will take you through the scenic fjords and dramatic mountains of Northern Norway. The boat journey will take 1 to 2.5 hours, depending on where you leave from. This gives you plenty of time to look for whales in their natural habitat.

After you return to the harbor, you will enjoy a warm and tasty lunch at a local restaurant. This meal is a perfect end to your whale-watching experience in Northern Norway.

Whales in Norway: A Majestic Encounter

Norway’s northern coast has some of the world’s best marine ecosystems, drawing many whale species to the area all year round. The fjords in Northern Norway, especially near Alta, are great for seeing orca and humpback whales. This is best during winter. The whales come to feed on herring in the cold, rich waters.

Humpback Whales

People recognize them for their impressive size and acrobatic displays, often breaching and slapping the water with their tails. These gentle giants are a favorite among whale watchers because of their playful behavior.

Orcas (Killer Whales)

Orcas are another highlight of whale watching in Norway. Orcas, known for their distinctive black and white markings, are social animals that often hunt in pods.

They are naturally curious. They commonly swim close to boats. This gives onlookers an exciting experience.
