When is the best time to hike to kjerag?

Kjerag is a seasonal hiking destination, and the season is very short. The plateau is normally covered in snow until late June. The season ends when the road closes for the season due to snow conditions around October.

How many kilometers is the hike?

The trail is 5 km each way, adding up to 10 km in total.

How many hours does it take to do the hike?

The duration of the hike varies, but a good rule of thumb is to estimate 3 hours each way.

What is the elevation gain?

You gain 600 meters (2,600 ft) of elevation during the hike.

How do I dress for the hike?

The area is known for its shifting and wet weather. When it’s raining the path to Kjerag gets quite slippery. Solid hiking boots are recommended, along with good clothing. Occasional strong gusts can occur at Kjerag, so please use wind and waterproof outerwear. 

What other equipment should I bring?

Pack a 30-litre backpack to be sure that you have enough room for everything you need. A map and compass, first-aid equipment, a fully charged mobile phone, and a headlamp are just some of the things we recommend you keep in your backpack. An extra set of clothes including a cap, a scarf, and gloves or mittens belong in your backpack.

How difficult is the hike?

The hike can be quite tough, with some intensive uphills and potentially slippery rocks. Along some of the most challenging parts there have been set up chains to help climb the sections. It is a demanding hike even for experienced hikers.
