A woman wearing a pink hiking jacket and black hiking pants are standing on the mountainside looking at the fjord and the mountains surrounding it on her way to the world famous cliff Trolltunga.

Are you the sort of person whose bucket list includes both Preikestolen (the Pulpit Rock) and Trolltunga (The Troll’s Tongue)? If so, then your luck’s in, because we are offering a coach trip that will take you effortlessly from one tourist destination to the other, leaving you to just relax in a comfortable coach seat while you take in the view.

Images of this famous rocky ledge in Hardanger have already spread the world over, and it is now becoming an established fact that The Tongue is a hiking experience you will never forget. Suddenly finding yourself standing there – all the sweat and the lactic fatigue and the hours on your feet that you have invested in getting there is worth it. It’s definitely not one for beginners however...

At Tau, you can take detours – in either direction – to Preikestolen, before continuing on your way to either Odda or Stavanger. We will organise a coach that will take you to and from the starting point for the Preikestolen walk, leaving you just over 4 hours for the walk itself and to capture for perpetuity the rock formation from its many angles and much-Instagrammed sides.

And the coach trip between Trolltunga and Preikestolen is an experience in itself, as you’re driven through the countryside along the RV 13. Historically, this was called the “Discovery Route”, and in the 1880s tourists used to travel this route by horse and cart to experience the spectacular West Norwegian countryside.

The means of transport may be much faster and more comfortable now, but the view is still impressive. The coach trip between Tau and Odda takes a bit more than 4 hours, including two stops for photo opportunities.

Sights on the trip

  • Trolltunga

Trolltunga (The Troll's Tongue) is one of the most spectactular scenic cliffs in Norway. Trolltunga is situated about 1100 meters above sea level, hovering 700 metres above Lake Ringedal in Skjeggedal.

it is important to emphasise that you must be used to mountains, be in good shape and dress according to the weather and terrain when setting out on this hike.

  • Låtefossen waterfall

The powerful 165-metre high waterfall is located just outside Odda. This waterfall is one of Norway's most popular nature-based tourist attractions. In the 1880s a hotel stood at the foot of the waterfall. This was at a time when British and German travellers visited the area by horse and cart. You can spot the remains of the foundations where the hotel once stood on the south side of the waterfall.

  • Erfjord Bridge

Erfjord Bridge is a suspension bridge crossen the fjord along Discovery Route (also known as rv13). The photogenic bridge is 294 meters long, and is located 23 meters above the Erfjord. It is beautifully surrounded by mountains.

Practical information

What to wear:

Since you’re heading for the hills, it’s important to check the weather report and wear the right clothing. The weather in the mountains can change quickly, so pack warm clothing and a wind- and waterproof outer layer whatever the weather report says. And don’t forget good walking shoes or boots.

Facilities:

The coach is equipped with toilets, as is the ferry between Stavanger and Tau.

Food:

There won’t be any opportunities to buy food or drink on route, so take a good packed lunch and plenty to drink on the trip. There are kiosks on some of the ferries between Stavanger and Tau, but unfortunately not all of them.

About the Trolltunga hike:

The hike to Trolltunga is long and arduous, with a 1,000-metre climb over a total distance of 27.5 km. It usually takes 10-12 hours. There’s a marked path from Skjeggedal, so you can complete the walk without a guide.

There are plenty of accommodation options in Odda, and also a few in Tyssedal.

About the Preikestolen hike:

You will complete this hike on your way to or from Trolltunga. Once the bus drops you off, you will have about 4 to 5 hours for the hike to Preikestolen and to enjoy the views on the way. The route is well marked and no guide is provided.

Additional tour information:

You start the tour by boarding the ferry at Fiskepiren in Stavanger. The coach to Preikestolen will be waiting for you when you get off the ferry at Tau, on the other side of the fjord. After completing the hike to Preikestolen, the coach will take you back to Tau, where you get on another coach that will take you on to Odda and Trolltunga.

If you start the trip at Odda, the coach for Preikestolen will be waiting for you at Tau. Once you get back to Tau after the trip, don’t forget to take all your possessions with you on the ferry back to Stavanger. The coach will be staying at Tau.
