Couple walking from Borgund to Vindhella

The King’s Road: Borgund Stave Church and Vindhella

Explore the ancient Borgund Stave Church and Vindhella with a guided tour for history buffs.

Begin your visit at the visitor center with exhibits on the stave church and Vikings, as well as a café and shop. Explore the medieval mystique of Borgund Stave Church on your own, listening to the guides inside. Your ticket is valid all day, so bring your receipt/voucher (paper or mobile) received after booking.

At 13:30, meet a King’s Road guide at the stave church and embark on a hike up the eastern side of Vindhella to the top of the famous hairpin bends. Along the way, learn about the construction of this engineering marvel, the workers, slave labor, and the strategic importance of Vindhella as the narrowest passage between east and west in ancient times. Discover ancient fortifications and the possible site of a historical ambush.

After spending time at the top, the guide will return to the stave church. You can choose to join them or continue exploring on your own, descending to Rimskjold or taking the round trip over Sverrestigen back to the stave church. The guide will explain the different routes.
